Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Sukhbir Singh Badal performed his religious duties at Takht Kesgarh Sahib in Punjab's Rupnagar district on Thursday, a day after surviving an assassination attempt.
This service, performed outside the revered Anandpur Sahib shrine, comes as part of his penance for past actions by the SAD government during his tenure as the state's deputy chief minister between 2007 and 2017.
Badal, who is currently under Z-level security protection, appeared at the gurdwara dressed in a blue 'sewadar' uniform and holding a spear in one hand. Surrounded by a heavy contingent of security personnel, he sat solemnly at the entrance of the gurdwara as part of a punishment pronounced by the Akal Takht—the supreme temporal body of the Sikh faith.

The penance, which involves performing 'sewadar' duties at key Sikh shrines, was issued for the mistakes attributed to Badal’s party, Shiromani Akali Dal, during its governance in Punjab. In addition to his duties at Takht Kesgarh Sahib, Badal has been directed to complete similar services at Takht Damdama Sahib, Darbar Sahib in Muktsar, and Fatehgarh Sahib for two days each, alongside his time at the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
On Wednesday, a man opened fire at Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal at the entrance of the Golden Temple. Badal, who was sitting in a wheelchair, was performing the duty of 'sewadar' when he was attacked. He escaped unhurt as the bullet hit a wall.
The attacker was identified as former Khalistani militant Narain Singh Chaura. He is a resident of Dera Baba Nanak.
Plainclothes police officers nearby quickly subdued the shooter, preventing further harm. Chaura, known for his involvement in the 2004 Burail jailbreak and numerous terror-related cases, was quickly apprehended by authorities.

Following the attempt on his life, elaborate security measures were in place for Badal’s visit to Takht Kesgarh Sahib. Rupnagar Senior Superintendent of Police Gulneet Singh Khurana confirmed that the district had implemented foolproof arrangementsttslot, including the deployment of plainclothes police officers to monitor the situation. The security presence ensured a smooth and secure visit for Badal, who was accompanied by other SAD leaders and supporters.
